Bonavita-BV1800The Bonavita BV1800 8-Cup Coffee Maker brews the ideal cup of coffee every time you use it, or so the manufacturer claims. It seems the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) agrees as the unit has received their certification for performance and quality. Benefiting from top-of-the-range German engineering, this coffee brewer might not look quite as high-tech as its peers, but it certainly delivers a tasty brew.

UPDATE 6/12/15: While the BV1800 is still marketed and remains a great coffee maker, we now recommend the updated Bonavita BV1900TS instead.

Features and Specifications

This coffee brewer features a 1400W thermal block heater designed to get the water to the right temperature as quickly as possible. This heater will release the water once it reaches 200 to 205 degrees F, which is the ideal brewing temperature.

This machine comes with a special shower head designed to make sure that water is dispersed properly over the coffee grounds. This ensures proper saturation of the grounds, leading to an excellent, full-flavored brew every time.

We prefer the BV1800SS or BV1800TS models, which come with a thermal carafe. But there’s also a glass carafe option that has a separate heater to keep your coffee warm after it’s been brewed, so there’s no need to worry about your coffee turning to sludge because you forgot the machine on as it has an auto-shut-off system that engages after 2 hours. The thermal carafe version doesn’t come with or require the heating plate, and there’s no chance of it over-cooking your coffee.

It has been designed for ease of use, with a water tank that is clearly marked to make it easier to fill to the right level. Furthermore, it features a wide opening, so you won’t have to worry about spilling water.

In terms of appearance, some might say it isn’t that amazing, which is true. It doesn’t have fancy flashing lights, a high-tech display, or a clock and timer, but it does brew one mean cup of coffee, which is what’s important. The design is quite simple, but it is an attractive unit, combining black plastic with a brushed metal casing and matching thermal (or glass) carafe. The Bonavita’s minimalist style is exactly what makes it so attractive.

The Good

First of all, the BV1800 brews a great coffee very quickly. In fact, it takes only about 7 minutes to brew a whole pot of coffee, which makes it great for those mornings when you’re in a rush. The dispersion pattern of the water has been well thought out, and the temperature of the water really does reach the needed 200 °F, leading to a stunningly good coffee. It’s also piping hot when finished, so if you like your coffee hot, then this unit is perfect for you.

Thanks to the proper saturation of the grounds and the hot water, this brewer extracts everything it can from the coffee grounds. So, if you’re looking for a coffee machine that makes a rich, delicious brew, then this is the perfect unit for you.

The Bonavita has a small footprint, so if you have a small kitchen, then this it will be ideal. In fact, its compactness makes it great for any setting where space is at a premium.

The Bad

Some people feel the lack of a timer is a little problematic. Many of us have gotten so used to setting our brewers to make coffee while we sleep that we can’t seem to live without a timer. However, this is a simple issue and can easily be overcome, especially considering how quickly the Bonavita brews. Simply prepare the coffee maker in the evening by adding the water and the coffee, then switch it on as soon as you get out of bed. The coffee will be ready before you finish brushing your teeth.

There were reports of some units springing leaks, but these were quickly replaced by the manufacturer. The fact is that there are bound to be rotten apples in any bunch, but the company dealt with the problem quickly, and to the complete satisfaction of the buyer.

The Verdict

The Bonavita BV1800 8-Cup Coffee Maker is a quality unit that brews an exceptional cup of coffee, especially when one takes into account the price of the machine. It isn’t what one would call a budget coffee brewer, but it’s nowhere near the price of the high-end hand-made coffee makers, yet it delivers comparable results. As with any product, there are bound to be some minor issues, but thanks to Bonavita’s quality customer service, any problems will be sorted quickly. So, if you’re looking to enjoy a rich, delicious brew that’s full of flavor, you can’t go wrong with the BV1800 from Bonavita.
